Optics is an experimental art film by Maxim Zhestkov, our studio's co-founder and creative director. The piece explores the behavior of artificial light and color in digital environments. Optics features computer-generated digital glass sculptures, in which we encounter multiple refractions, chromatic aberrations, reflections and other conditions which are impossible in reality.
The film was initiated as a series of tests at Zhestkov.Studio / Media.Work. After some research, we realized that the beauty and the visual power of these explorations could be transformed into an art film rather than stay a series of tests. Optics captures a transitive moment from predictable stillness to a chaotic whirl of matter, giving birth to another form.
The process of working on Optics was intensely experimental, as the behavior of white light passing through the digital glass was highly unpredictable and could only be seen after hours of rendering. Technical directors ended up creating around one thousand different tools and methods for processing the light, and that is how the film came to life.
